How tissues develop and regenerate while restoring correct size, structure, and mechanical organization remains a fundamental question in biology. In the first part of the talk, I will show how regeneration of tissues and organs of different levels of complexity in the axolotl can be understood through minimal mechanically based mathematical models that capture essential features of tissue dynamics. In the second part of my talk, I will present ForSys, a computational framework for inferring mechanical stresses in epithelial tissues, and illustrate its applications across different biological systems to uncover general mechanical principles of tissue organization.
